Leah AtwellFlorida’s Tobacco State – Tobacco Use Disparities in FloridaIntroduction: There has been an overall reduction in current smokers in Florida. However, the state’s current smokers rate hides a substantial variation among regions of Florida. A group of 33 counties lag behind the rest of the state in terms of decreasing tobacco use, which we collectively term Florida’s “Tobacco State.” Methods: Florida counties were placed into either the “Tobacco State” or “Non-Tobacco State” based on whether their current smoking prevalence exceeds Florida’s average rate. The counties were further broken down into four regions: Panhandle, North, Central, and South. Data from the Florida Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Florida Youth Tobacco Survey , US Bureau of the Census, American Communities Survey , and the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics were used. The “Tobacco State” and “Non-Tobacco State” were compared. Maps were created using ArcMap 10.3.1. Results: The south Florida region was the only region with no counties belonging to the “Tobacco State”. The “Tobacco State” had higher rates of poverty, individuals who were unemployed and individuals without a high school diploma. People in the “Tobacco State” had higher death rates for several diseases often related to tobacco use. https://www.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=01294211d6e742ea8fb857eaab8aad07Florida Department of HealthTera Anderson, Justine Gunderson, Lauren Porter
